About

Echo Lanterns was formed in 2024 by lead vocalist Albert Liu and lead guitarist Justin Jen. Their name is inspired by their shared East Asian heritage - a symbol of letting go of the past and embracing new beginnings. Albert and Justin have been instrumentalists since childhood and have been writing original music since they were 18. This led them to train at Berklee College of Music where they earned their degrees in Electronic Production and Audio Engineering.

Albert and Justin first met in Boston at a rich cultural site for Asian Americans: the boba tea shop. Their friendship developed over their mutual love of 90s-2000s alternative rock and shared passions as solo artists. Albert released alternative/indie rock music under the name LostBoy Kujo, while Justin wrote Midwest emo/math rock-influenced songs under Majuro. Their first musical collaboration was, surprisingly, an EDM song called "You Can, I Can" by Cowboy Club.

They formed Echo Lanterns with the goal of furthering Asian American representation in the music industry, particularly in the alternative and indie rock/pop genres. Their inspiration derives from familial and relationship dynamics driven by their cultural upbringing. As these themes showcase in their songwriting, the duo continues to challenge traditional Asian stereotypes by unapologetically expressing their emotional vulnerability. As they grow, Echo Lanterns seeks to uplift and inspire listeners to be proud of their unique identities.
